    The seminar seeks to answer the question whether the teaching of gender studies calls for a specific methodology. The principles of feminist teaching methods, such as collective non-hierarchical learning will be introduced and topical key issues of gender studies will be discussed. The seminar will also focus on the importance of local socio-political context in gender studies practice as well as the use of foreign-language theories and materials in local classrooms. In addition to the presentations of specialists from the Nordic countries and experienced gender studies scholars from the Baltic countries, all participants are invited to share their experience of teaching in active roundtable discussion. The working language of the seminar is English.

    17:30   presentation of the Estonian Gender Studies Journal Ariadne’s Clew (2004) by the editors Mirjam Hinrikus and Eve Annuk followed by a reception.

     

    All participants are expected to do some preliminary work (analysis of their teacing practices) and active participation in the roundtable.

     

    Questions for the round table: How has your gender studies course fitted into Estonian academic and social context? Have had to explain the necessity for your course as such? How?

    Which teaching methods, including electronic ones have you used? Have you paid special attention to gender sensitive teaching methods? Do you feel this would be necessary?

    Can you comment on your use (import) of gender studies concepts and study materials formulated and compiled in other socio-cultural contexts (i.e. Anglo-American, Scandinavian)? Which local material (ie issues of the Estonian Gender Studies journal Ariadne Lõng) have you used?

    In case you find interesting situations and/or problems that could be used as case-studies for round-table discussions you are welcome to send us a brief description.
